Character Information
Name: Kimihiro Watanuki
Canon: xxxHolic
Canon Point: While Watanuki is on his very first solo wish-granting job to teach a woman how to cook; just before Yuuko's true death.
Age: Unknown; high school age (between 16 -18)
History:
Watanuki Kimihiro is, simply put, a man without a universe. His 'surname' Watanuki has a double meaning. The first is April 1st, which so happens to be his birthday. It also refers to the ceremony for the removing the heavy padding on a child's kimono to act as a decoy. The padding's close proximity to the child is supposed to fool spirits into thinking the padding is the child themselves, thus avoiding having illness for bad luck placed onto them. In layman's terms: Watanuki himself is also a decoy to another person altogether, and not supposed to exist.
Syaoran Li, the person that Watanuki is a sort of spiritual successor of, flickers between various worlds, and Watanuki is a place holder, so that space and time are not warped from the absence of such an important individual. Due to his role as a placeholder, Watanuki has no family or many memories to really call his own... at least, until the day he winds up at the front door of the Space-Time Witch Ichihara Yuuko.
Watanuki has always been plagued with the ability to see ghost, and further more, ghosts and spirits and all things that go 'bump in the night' seemed to love him as well. With claims that they desire to 'consume him', Watanuki has spent his every waking moment attempting to avoid them, even when he was a child. This has led him to become ostracized from his peers and other people in general, as they are unable to see what he does, and Watanuki is forced to combat the ghouls alone. One day, he wanders into Yuuko's shop 'on accident', but she is quick to tell him that nothing is by coincidence, and that everything is due to hitsuzen; the inevitable. Yuuko herself was in the business of granting wishes from anyone who needed it but for a proper price. Watanuki needed his own wish granted: for ghost to stop chasing him, and for him to no longer see spirits. Yuuko told him once he had done enough work to pay the price, she would grant it to him, and thus Watanuki's adventures of indentured servitude began.
Watanuki was privy to the plethora of wishes that passed through the shop, and through one way or another found himself wrapped up in them, helping to grant wishes or see the consequences played out. The incidents range from the infamous “Curse of the Monkey's Paw”, a story about human luck and the ever present thought that a person is invincible to bad happenings just because they think they're special. Another wish is about twins, and one whom seems to be making mistakes, and the other who uses hurtful words to bind their sister to continue making them forever. Another is about a woman who can't seem to get away from the computer, despite the needs of her children and husband, as well as an incident about a woman who commits murder and the price she must pay for holding such a strong burden on her soul.
During these adventures, he accompanied by Doumeki Shizuka, the grandson of a shrine priest who had purification powers and the ability to stave away spirits. Another friend is Himawari, Watanuki's long-time crush, but not his Lady Luck: she attracts bad luck, but Doumeki can neutralize it so the three of them can hang out. He also meets Kohane, a TV psychic medium who has a lot in common with Watanuki, and the two grow close to one another. Watanuki continues to meet many faces, widening the web of connections he has. Hilariously, though Watanuki continues to work for Yuuko in order to pay off his tab to get his powers removed, time is wasted, items (whether precious or just plain junk) are destroyed, and Watanuki's tab continues to be added onto throughout the course of his employment to the Space-Time Witch, almost ensuring he'll work there forever. He's about 98% sure Yuuko is keeping him around for laughs. Well, so he thinks.
In reality, Watanuki's continued employment is being used as a means for him to get to know others and the world. As a clone, he is not supposed to exist. However, by forming bonds of love, friendship, even rivalry, Watanuki is slowly forging his place in the world, creating his own reason to exist and be important. Yuuko has also begun to allow Watanuki to take on the job of granting wishes in his own way, without the use of magic as she does. Slowly, through perseverance and hard-work, Watanuki is learning that there are people out there who care for him, and that he is more than just a clone or a replacement, but a person all of his own.
At the moment, however, something is wrong with Yuuko, and Watanuki is attempting to find out what is wrong with her...
Personality:
In regards to personality, Watanuki is best labeled as 'volatile'. For the most part, he is genuinely polite and considerate when dealing with others. He is respectful to all that he meets and regards people with courtesy. Even for strangers, he will go a little out of his way to help them, if it is nothing that will post a major inconvenience. He appears a little shy and mousy, attempting to feel out the person and see how he should respond in turn to them.
The reality is that such a personality, while not a front, is just the tip of the iceberg. One wrong push or tilt in any direction can have Watanuki slapping together a different face altogether to show off. This other face is usually on the opposite spectrum to the quiet and polite private school student persona that he has. Those that meet this Watanuki can expect a loud, mouthy, and prone-to-fighting-words screeching banshee of a boy, even if he doesn't have the muscle to back it up. Because of his fragile, lanky, noodly appearance, his 'tough-guy' attitude isn't given much weight, as just comes across as funny or humorous to others (after all, how can a noodle-boy back up his claim to 'punch you into the next universe' when it barely looks like he could throw one?). Just as easily as this side is spurred on, it can flip back to polite like a light switch, or even take on a whole different emotion, such as extreme, debilitating woefulness or blissful love-drunkenness if the right name is mentioned.
Once someone finally gets to know him, the sudden mood swings no longed become alarming and are just seeing as a part of his strange personality... and can be played for the sake of amusement, if the right buttons are pushed. Expect to be on the scolded and nagged end of things if you come across as lazy, gluttonous, a drunkard, or all three, as his experience with his "owner" Ichihara Yuuko and his "friend" Doumeki Shizuka have made such traits odd triggers for his foul moods. Expect to be met with screaming, yelling, scolding—whatever the situation calls for. And thrashing. Lots and lots of meaningless thrashing. The way his body can bend is very fascinating, actually. Watanuki tends to overreact and exaggerate his emotions discomforts in a variety of facial expressions (until he really, truly means it, and then he will suddenly go silent and not let anyone know he is hurting).
Despite his odd way of showing it, Watanuki genuinely cares about the well-being of others. He is considered a top-notch chef by the Dimensional Witch Yuuko herself, and is constantly complimented on the quality of his cooking easily comparative to a five-star chef. Watanuki has cooked since a very young age, able to pump out pristine, decorative cakes even at the age of ten (as he used to make for the landlords of the apartment he lived in). Having been alone since a very young age, cooking well was a necessity, and now Watanuki views it as a treasured hobby. Even if he raises a fuss about having to cooking for others, he is astounding at it, and takes the time to creature careful crafted masterpieces that are not only visually appealing to the eye, but also unbeatable in taste. He is a master of all culinary pursuits, but he has a fondness for creating desserts, as they usually require more delicate and elaborate steps to create them, which leaves him with a feeling of satisfaction once completed.
He also enjoys what is considered domesticated pursuits such as housekeeping. He keeps Yuuko's estate and shop clean, even going as far as deep cleaning her basement where she keeps a bunch of treasured items. He has even helped Doumeki with cleaning the shrine, and of course he has his usually after-school classroom duties on top of keeping his own apartment clean as well. He is systematic in all of his duties: from the way he sweeps and mops the floors, to how he folds kimonos only in kimono paper and irons laundry. He is also a spend-thrift, being meticulous about saving money and buying good quality food and goods on the cheap. He is known to be sure to collect supermarket stamps for points to receiving free items and get money off for future purchases. He is organized and keeps written and mental lists in his head for this duties for the day, whether it is noted ingredients for what he plans to cook or errands he must run for the day. He will do these tasks with or without help, and even if he calls the recipient of his skills lazy and ungrateful, he doesn't ask for their help.
This segways into how Watanuki is also too independent to ask for help, even if he needs it. While it may not be necessary for things he is adept at (cooking, cleaning, running errands, etc), he is nearly incapable of drawing the line of knowing when to ask for help. On many occasions, Watanuki has put himself in a bind or even in danger due to his strong sense of independence. His refusal to ask for help (and, even worse, his insistence that he does not deserve help), has gotten him into touch situations and has sometimes hurt others in the process (usually by hurting himself). He still has trouble recognizing that he is in fact important to some people, and worthy of love as his own person. One of these instances led to him getting his right eye eaten by a Spider Demon, and he hid it under an eye patch for the longest time before it was brought to light what happened. This led to his friend becoming angry for accepting a punishment in his stead. Watanuki's fast belief in this has drawn bad luck to him many times, and will continue to do so unless he learns his lesson.
Watanuki is also on the fence of having a determined and self-defeating nature. On one hand, when it comes to the protection, the dreams, and wishes of other people, he feel compelled to put his best foot forward to help. It allows him the chance to push aside his easily frightened personality and power through hard time to see a good conclusion. On the other hand, if the issue concerns himself, he is more reluctant to surpass his own fears, seeing the cause of 'himself' as ultimately not worth it, and willing to suffer the consequences for it. This is a hard showing of his somewhat weak personality as he constantly sees himself as 'not worth it'. This is due to a much deeper issue: the fact that he is the spiritual decoy of Syaoran Li, and technically not supposed to exist. This is the reason behind his constant subconscious decisions to not stands up for himself: a measure to erase himself from the world, as he's not supposed to even exist.
Aside from the mundane, Watanuki also has skills that lean towards the supernatural lean, such as dream-walking (astral projection), precognition (seeing visions or hints of the definite future), and being able to see ghosts/spirits, as well as obtain awareness of cursed objects or foul intent in people. The latter ability lends itself as a terrible stench and smog that comes off of the subject in question. Even though Watanuki has the abilities, he will usually saddle them to the side or ignore them. He prefer to use his 'normal' senses to guide him, of over the course of time has found that attempting to ignore signs given to him will only lead him on a path to disaster. He attempts to meet in a happy middle. While he will not allow his prophetic dreams and other senses to rule over his decisions, he will keep them in mind to be consulted as necessary.
In the end, Watanuki is a generally kind, caring, and genuine individual. He wears his heart on his sleeve and is not afraid to show how he is feeling at any given time, and, he believes it is important for others to do the same when needed. Regardless of how he is treated, he will care about them to a certain degree, and unless the relationship or person takes an ultimate turn for the worse, Watanuki will still hold out on them until the very end.
Abilities: Watanuki is known for being incredible at domestic duties on... possibly a godly level. He is noted by Yuuko the Space-Time Witch that his cooking and cleanliness are the best she has ever run into... and she can travel through dimensions. On top of having exceptional cooking, cleaning, and other domestic skills, Watanuki is also decently athletic. He's very flexible and can run very fast. He probably got it from running away from ghosts and demons and all that great stuff. He is able to sense people's emotions, particularly negative ones, as they emit to him a foul stench even if the person doesn't feel as if they are doing wrong. He can usually see a black smoke around them as well. Watanuki is also precognitive, which means he is able to see the definite future. Usually, this is in the form of omens of ill-fortune, but it's not to say that he can't see good things, either. Watanuki is also capable of dream-walking, though for the most part this is beyond his control and he just winds up somewhere (however, it focused he can visit people in their dreams intentionally). He is able to see and communicate with supernatural spirits and entities, but along with that, such creatures think he also smells delicious, to the point where monsters track him down specifically to eat him.
Strengths:
Will assist anyone; even those found 'bad'
Follows up on any promises he makes
Sees things through to the end
Able to gauge proper equivalent exchange/give-and-take
Boundless amounts of energy
Weaknesses:
Emotionally Volatile
Lack of self-worth/self-sacrificing
Wary of new things
Frightens/scares easily
Fiercely independent/takes on too much by himself
God/Shinki: God
Why?: Throughout xxxHolic, Watanuki has encountered various individuals, from supernatural entities and even gods, as many have looked favorably upon him, citing him as different or special in some way or form. He already works to grant people's wishes, and eventually in canon ascends to become the wish-granter. As The Far Shore focuses on a new life as a god, it only makes sense to place him in the role of a wish-granted, as per his destiny.
Top 3 Choices:
(In order of preference)
Guanyin; God/dess of Mercy
Kamui Fuchi; Goddess of Home and Domestic Affairs
Opis; Goddess of Plenty
God Type: Watanuki would most likely hold true to the end goal of the god/dess he invokes, however, he can be stubborn and stuck in his own ways of how to do things. If he feels as if he is able to make an improvement in a certain area, he will attempt to do so. He's ultimately a good person and will strive for that same morality. For wishes, he will grant only those he sees as fit. He will most likely stray away from wishes that do harm... unless, of course, he feels there may be a lesson to be learned for either himself, the wish-granter, or even his shinki.
Power: Psychometry would be an interesting ability, as it relates to obtaining the knowledge of things and sometimes people by touch. It would go along with his current ability to sense people's ill intent. Any of the gods he is chosen as could find use with this, as they could be used to garner compassion and obtain understanding of subjects and why they make the wishes they do. Watanuki would most likely use this to learn more about people whose wishes he is trying to grant, or find out information to assist he and his shinki. Finding out where a lost dog might be by touching a broken collar, or the last person a gun shot by getting his hands on it, or even how a woman felt when her husband cheated on her by touching her wedding ring are all things that he may utilize. As information comes in all forms, they could all be useful.

The real question was who judged gods on their piety and cleanliness. Other gods, perhaps? Watanuki wasn't sure. Regardless, his temple would surely be judged, because he had failed to do it's daily maintenance the day before. He'd been busy! So, the young god rolled up his sleeves to get to work.
"How am I going to reach those high places...?" He could help but gaze up high to the tall ceilings of the temple. He pressed his lips into the line, putting a hand on his hip. "Hmm... maybe I really tall ladder...? Or maybe I could reach the light fixture from the landing with a broom..."
It was worth a shot.
Watanuki was quick to gather up the necessary supplies for his domestic venture and head up to the landing. He dusted and polished the banister to the stairs on his way up (though any general consensus would say it didn't need it). The willowy teenager paused at the landing, setting down his bucket of supplies, the other hand resting the Swiffer duster he had purchased from the supermarket beside him. He made a vague gesture with his arm in an attempt to measure the distance from the landing to the light. "I should be able to reach..." He leaned over the banister, where he knew his shinki was relaxing in the other room. "...Though it would have been GREAT to have had SOME HELP."
Watanuki leaned his stomach against the bannister, reaching out with the Swiffer duster to dust the small crevices of the light fixture. He watched small particles fly off and scatter into the air, but most of them were collected as he cleaned. He leaned over further. Dust dust. The bannister was hard against his stomach. Watanuki leaned further still, to get to the other side. He had to stand on his tip-toes. Dust, dust--
"MOTHER FU--asdfghjkl;" He lost his balance and nearly went toppling over the side of the landing. He dropped the Swiffer, latching on with both arms to the banister. The Swiffer clattered to the ground, and Watanuki woefully watched as all the dust he collected scattered into the ground and air. The young god let out a sigh. Great. Just Great.
"...At least the light is clean, I guess." Oh well. He could worry about it after he cooked dinner.

Anything Else?: We would like to be paired with the applying player, Anthea, and her character Jade Curtiss, a shinki.
